Sean Love Combs, also known as P. Diddy and formerly Puff Daddy, is an American rapper, record producer, and record executive who has been charged with sex trafficking by force and racketeering. He is expected in court following his arrest in New York City on Monday. Instead of jail, Mr. Combs’s legal team proposed a bail package that included a $50 million bond co-signed by Mr. Combs, his mother, and other family members. The proposal also included home detention, the surrender of his passport, weekly drug tests, and a nightly visitor log to be submitted to pre-trial services. However, the judge overseeing Wednesday’s proceedings rejected the proposal.

Judge Andrew Carter expressed concerns about the potential for obstructing justice and tampering with witnesses. “My primary worry revolves around the risk of obstructing justice and witness tampering,” the judge remarked. “That is a significant concern for me in this case.” After the decision, Mr. Combs’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, spoke to the media, acknowledging that the ruling “was not in our favor,” but assured the public that “the battle is far from over.”

The 14-page indictment charges Mr. Combs with racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted on all three counts, he faces a sentence ranging from 15 years to life in prison. On Tuesday, when asked how he pleaded by Judge Robyn Tarnofsky, Mr. Combs stood and declared, “Not guilty.” Afterward, Mr. Agnifilo confirmed that the defense team had already launched an appeal of the judge’s bail decision.

Court filings indicate that Mr. Combs allegedly exploited his position to “entice female victims into engaging in prolonged sex acts referred to as ‘Freak Offs.’” The indictment further suggests that Mr. Combs supplied various controlled substances to make his victims “docile and cooperative.” In a press conference, U.S. prosecutor Damian Williams disclosed that law enforcement uncovered firearms, ammunition, and over 1,000 bottles of lubricant during raids on Mr. Combs’s properties in Miami and Los Angeles six months prior. Williams also noted that federal agents discovered three semi-automatic rifles with altered serial numbers and a drum magazine, with the potential for additional charges.

Despite the serious nature of the accusations, Mr. Combs’s attorney firmly maintains his client’s innocence. Mr. Agnifilo stated that there was “no coercion and no offense,” insisting that the prosecution was unfairly singling out Mr. Combs. On the other hand, prosecutors contend that Mr. Combs orchestrated a criminal operation where individuals, under his command, were involved in sex trafficking, forced labor, abduction, arson, and bribery. Additionally, the court filings claim that Mr. Combs repeatedly assaulted women, including striking, punching, dragging, and hurling objects at them.
