Rwandan actress Uwase Phionah has been nominated for the Best Upcoming Actress of the Year award at the Inganji Awards Edition 2. She earned this nomination for her role as “Monalisa” in the ongoing YouTube web series UMWALI, directed by Isihaka. Yes, you heard it right—Isihaka is still at it, as the series continues to unfold.

Uwase Phionah is quickly gaining popularity in the Rwandan film industry, with many referring to her by her character’s name, Monalisa. In an exclusive interview, she shared some of her most memorable moments in her cinematic journey. Phionah’s first screen appearance was in the web series ISI NIBYAYO, which was also directed by Isihaka.

During the interview, Phionah expressed her deep appreciation for Isihaka, whom she considers her mentor. She revealed that he was the one who introduced her to the film industry. Due to their strong working relationship, she didn’t have to go through an audition for the role of Monalisa—she was typecasted.

In less than two years, Phionah has appeared in five web series, including Isi NIBYAYO, THREE SISTERS, GAME OF LOVE, HIDDEN STORY, and UMWALI. This is an impressive achievement for an up-and-coming actress. When asked how she felt about being nominated,
she said, “When the awards team first contacted me, I honestly thought it was a scam. It was hard to believe I had made it until I spoke with the series director, who confirmed it. I am very grateful.”

Appearing in five different web series in such a short time is no easy job. Phionah’s continued presence in various productions highlights her acting talent and dedication, which is why she keeps landing roles. Now, all eyes are on March 8, 2025, when the winners of the Inganji Awards Edition 2 will be announced.
